The schools and houses got damaged because of mining

Community Alerts/ Mahadio Mohapi/ Klerksdorp- North West/ 22 September 2016

The 5.5 magnitude earthquake hit hard in Orkney and Kanana mining town (North West) in 2014. Several schools and houses Kanana township left badly damaged. This situation got worse simply because of mining activity in our area. One person died as a result after a roof fell on him.  The sad reality is, the mines around didn’t take responsibility for this as the incident was linked to the natural disaster. In August 2016, the government in the North West rolled out the budget set to benefit four schools in Kanana which were damaged. The community is now worried about the question of contractors which are from outside the community, the problem around jobs keeps on re-surfacing, each time the is project services are not procured locally, and this has always been the case with the mines operating around. The community demands that the services required at the mines and at the community be procured locally in order to reduce the massive unemployment levels which breeds poverty, prostitution, gang related crimes, and teenage pregnancies. The Kanana community forum is not happy about the continued ignorance of the local entrepreneurs in every single project in the area, it is not right that every time a project must be stopped to in order to be heard.
