Today I am in Mokopane attending a conference specially designed for Mogalakwena themed Mogalakwena! – Defending our rights against the Mine. “Increasing pressure from all possible points”, organized by ECCHR, ACTION AID and MACUA with the support of: Bread for the world.
The agenda includes: Identify transnational business relations and how to use them to increase pressure points. Why address third actors? What do we know about pressure points of mining companies in SA/AMPLATS. Who gives the money, who provides technology and who buys the production.
An interesting breakaway session.
During the breakaway session we had a wonderful interesting discussion and it was revealed that Anglo American has 7 pension funds contributing towards its businesses with 5 of them coming from Dutch. Topics discussed include. 1- Does the investors have leverage; how do they want their investment to work and how does it affect people around. The Norwegian Government Pension Fund Global (NGPF)which has a total of 840 billion Euros of assets in management is currently divesting in coal because of its ethics.
