South Africa Alternative Mining Indaba preparatory Meeting
Today we had the 2nd South Africa alternative mining indaba (SAAMI) preparation meeting, held at Johannesburg 25-26 October 2017
EJN (Economic Justice Network) has been hosting the Alternative Mining Indaba secretariat since 2011. This came up when Benchmarks and EJN sit down and came up with this idea.
These are sone comments made in the meeting
Nkatego Tshaeuke from OSSISA (Open Society Initiative of Southern Africa)
– They are convinced that there are platforms at the local level.
– Their efforts is to support AMI.Recently they started to think about how to support the local communities
AASA (Sfiso Dladla)- they are looking forward seeing the success of SAAMI. At this stage they dont have any inputs. They have to return to their organisation to get a mandate.
Oxfam SA (Thembinkosi)- There are looking at the issues around mining
– They have engage with Benchmarks Foundation).
-EJN and Oxfam they are working together
-Osisa, Oxfam and EJN want this to be successful across the region. There are similar issues e.g like Emalahleni can work together with KZN communities going forward there is a common solution to the problem
* There is a need to include government official on the next SAAMI.
