Waste collectors start work without proper safety clothing (PPE)

Community Alerts/Thokozile Mntambo/Soweto-Snakepark/26/02/18

On the 24th of December 2017 we were invited at Protea North to come and sign contracts for the general worker post we applied for, the contract was  3months contract with the waste group under Pikitup EPWP, the contract stated that we are going to start working on the second of February 2018 until the 30th of March 2018.Our job description was to clean all the dumping sights of Snakepark and streets of which we were not even given the safety uniform nor tools to use, we rate R120 per day. As hungry as were we signed the contracts cause we’re tired of being the victims of unemployment.

On the 4th of January we started working without PPE (gloves, boots) remember we’re working with waste that very same day just before we knock off the mob of Jozi@work attacked us throwing rubbish on the streets that we’ve put in rubbish bags, they were angry that their contract was terminated, and we are doing their job.

To avoid the conflict they were also invited to sign the same contact we signed on the 19th of January SANCO came to our attention and informed us that we’re not supposed to work cause there’s an ongoing strike in region (Snakepark,Tshepisong & Braamfisherville) regarding the contract we signed so we should be part of the strike, we have not worked since then but we were paid. So, we still attending meetings with SANCO. By Thokozile Mntambo
