Taung Gold invited members of the public to engage with their social labour plan document, the aim was to engage the community in the interrogation of this document and to ensure public participation in the decision making process.

 

Different organizations representing a diverse elements of civil society responded and honoured the invitation

The purpose was to capture and gather ideas and aspirations and what will eventually be beneficial to the communities whose livelihood has always and solely been dependent on mining.

The new mine will operate at what used to be Freddie’s mine in Odendaalsrus.

The public also raised their demands and a robust and friendly engagement paved way for a consensus between the public and the mining company since they appointed a consultant company called UMZIZI to act as agents.

This was however the first in a series of many consultations that are still to follow suite. The next and more broader consultation will take place on the 1st of June 2022 as this one was solely for the SLP engagement.

 

The mining company was granted the license in 2017 by the DMRE but could not commence the operation due to insufficient capital and the Covid outbreak was another glitch that halted the operation and the current license will be renewed in 2024
