Sekhukhine District is one of the areas with minerals like in Gauteng and North West provinces. We see more mine opening with people people believing that their lifes will even if there are lots of complaints from other mine hosting communities , people from GaMogashoa village are also waiting and hoping for life to get better as they have been struggling for many years. The community is waiting for its mine to open but it seems by the time it opens it the area there will be serious trouble as the village is decided from other mines by mountains, our community observed the negative effects of mining on water, air and on ways of living
Water crisis has always has been an issue in GaMogashoa, the village has experienced a scarcity of water for years, it is known that mining uses large amount of water and the question is, after the mine starts operating what will happen.
Will mine be able to fix all roads and water problems? What if things gets worse? I ask myself as a monitor because problems should be fixed and not wait for mine to open, negotiations and meetings are being held but no one knows when will the mine open.
It is not only water that is a problem, people are unemployed and the roads are damaged. Driving in the village is so difficult, on some roads you must look before you drive as the roads are damaged to a point they are no more 2 ways but turned into 1 way.
On the 18 May 2023 water came out on taps after weeks and only few as we patiently waited to fill up all tanks but were not all full as it came out from 16:00 until 22:00.
Our parents used to sort water problems with traditional leaders but its no longer happening. The community will work together to fix roads but the dongas are huge that people struggle to fix them, we are looking for Municipality to assist but years are passing without assistence.
Solutions
* Councilor and his committee must meet with community and highlight and note every problems and report to the Municipality
* There should be community meetings with all stakeholders each quarter to report problems and get updates
* People must know when will the problem be solved and how long will it take.
* Our traditional leadership must find a way to assist the community by communicating with Municipality.
* Traditional leadership must work with other community leaders when making decisions that affect the community.
* Community must get more information on the mine’s Social Labor Plan and how the mine is going to improve the lives of the people so that a decision about the mine can be taken before the mine can open.
