Poorly road maintenance

Victoria Makgoo

People of Morapaneng and Ditwebeleng villages travel on the dilapidated R37 road, and some members
of the community have joined hands to repair and maintain the road and they are using their own
water and transport even cement to repair the potholes that have been coursed by mine trucks, they
are asking passing cars for donations so they can buy more cement and materials so they can
continue to repair all potholes.

A pothole is a depression in the road surface usually asphalt pavement, it is usually the result of water
and trucks and other vehicles that are passing day by day resulting in traffic removing pieces of the
pavement.

Poorly maintained roads can both directly and indirectly affect many areas of daily life, this led to
some men from the community to unite and do road maintenance because they are the ones who are
using the road on an everyday basis. Their work assists from causing traffic disturbance to lowering
property value over time, even beyond being a daily nuisance, poor roads can be a fiscal headache
for local citizens.

Solution
The community needs to engage with the mine and discuss all community grievances as they
need the road to be repaired. The community is always laying complaints but none of them have ever
been attended to even to this date, complaints date last year in August when there was a community
meeting. We need the mine to hear the voice of the community and also not make decisions for the
community.
