A lack of a moral society

Rethabile Tshabalala

We are a small community and most of the people in Kroondal are from various places and different ethnicities, the issue is we are a diverse group of people, and our morals are not the same and our cultural boundaries are not the same. This breeds immoral behavior; we have a problem with a lot of elderly men who are taking advantage of young women and underage girls mostly because of their financial background. We also have a lot of teenage pregnancies, the older men who have no moral values whatsoever. The biggest issue is the parents who don’t talk with their children about such things, most of the time you find that some parents are encouraging their children to do such things.

It brings me great shame to see this type of behavior and to think that we live in an environment where our children are no longer safe from sex-craved men. Men have no shame or any regard for the negative impact this brings on our community because it breeds more poverty as some of these girls end up no longer wanting to go to school. This brings only shame to these girls because they are the talk of the community.

Such matters should be addressed but it seems that we no longer live in a moral society, people do as they see fit with no regard for how much this impacts the growth of our society. We don’t have women who can represent our communities with dignity because they never had the chance to be young women and enjoy their youth.

Such issues can easily be addressed, it’s just that most people don’t know which steps to take, or they just play ignorance. Some don’t bother because it’s happening, and everyone is just turning a blind eye. If recreational facilities were created and young women could spend most of their time doing something productive and conducive, there would be fewer cases like this. I believe that young people need to be cultivated, especially young vulnerable women who come from disadvantaged homes. People just need hope, something to believe in but if there is none, then people are prone to really bad decisions. I believe that older men and women also need to be made aware of such things, to bring the thought of a moral society to the life of young women. Being educated about such things makes it difficult for them to fall prey to cockeyed and greedy older men who just want to use them
