My community has myths about tailing mine dump

Nobulawo Sitshaluza

The mine left without doing a proper job in our community. The tailing mine dump was there in the early 90s  when as the community we first moved to Snakepark.

Most of our community members believe that the tailing mine dump is some sort of powerful place as such should be treated with respect. They believe that some phenomenal events have occurred at the tailing.

The first resident who decided to remain anonymous gave us this advice when she heard that we were involved in the phytoremediation project in the tailing mine dump. She says that” every time we are there at tailing mine dump each at every one of us need to start praying and asking for some sort of permission to be there to let whoever owns the mine dump could give us permission and no harm can come to us.” Therefore afterward we can start to continue with our work on our phyto project. “

The second Snakepark who decided to remain anonymous” says that the residents at the Mountains View were told by a child “that an old man says that they need to start painting their shacks because they were blinding him.”

Community member are very spiritual and superstitious as well, so its easier for them to believe it. In that its easier for them to ignore the fact that that is not a natural mountain its a man made dump  that occurred after the mine finished mining in that area and therefore our community needs to understand the danger  that this tailing dump is a huge  contributer to our health issues.
