The network towers dispute was resolved and life became better.

 

Three years ago in May 2021, Sefikile village councilor Mr Itumeleng “Zola” Serole and his ward committee members decided to make some changes in the Sefikile community. As we were struggling with network issues in our village. He then applied for network towers. 

 

In Sefikile village we have two tribal offices under two different tribal chieftaincies, which are Bakgatla ba Kgafela and Bakgatla ba Sefikile, Bakgatla ba Kgafela agreed with the councilor’s opinion as they always support him. It caused a lot of disagreement between the two tribal offices because the other tribal office was not against the brilliant idea of bringing network towers. 

 

By that time learners from two schools, Sefikile Primary School and Makuka Secondary School were struggling to do their research and homework because of network issues. Here is the problem: during that time Makuka Secondary School was supposed to apply for Identity documents for 555 learners, but the Department of Home Affairs managed to make only 20 identity documents for learners because of network issues.

 

“I was very scared that I wouldn’t be able to write my final exam since I didn’t get my identity document and other fellow grade 12 learners too, so it was very difficult for us.” this is Onkabetse ‘s words, one of the Matric learners of 2021.

 

In South Africa, Matric learners can only write Matric final exams if they have an identity document but only 535 learners didn’t get an Identity document because of some people who declined changes when It comes to our community. This shows that changes are not always bad, some changes are not always bad.

 

Finally, in September 2023, the two tribal offices came to an understanding that we need network towers so they have agreed, now we can get networks fast, and people can apply for jobs very easily without any network issues. Some can communicate with their families without any network struggle as this year 2024 there is full network coverage.
