My village
Lehlohonolo Lesomo
Phokeng is one of the twenty-nine villages that make up the Royal Bafokeng nation, it also as the administrative headquarters of the of all other villages. It is governed by the traditional leadership led by his Majesty King Leruo Molotlegi.
Phokeng has two small mines that are situated on the outskirts of the village. Glencore mine is about 15km on the east of the village while Ilita Chrome is about 17km west of the village.
The village hosts a large number of migrant workers, that has led to a rapid growth of the population.
As an area that hosts migrant mine workers and workers from other industries, it is densely populated and amenities such as clinics and schools are a real shortage to the village. Infrastructure is another serious problem for the people of Phokeng because the current one is not enough to cater for all of us as residents.
Our hope is that the royalties from the mine will be utilized to the benefit of all the residents of Phokeng, as it is evident that we lack many things in terms of development while we live on large deposits of rich minerals.
