Huge Potholes on the road
Thobejane Boitumelo
The road connects 2 mines, Twickenham and Hackney mines, and the Moopetsi Camp Anglooffice and it passes through a few villages(Mohleweng, Camp, Ditwebeleng, Mototolong, Morapaneng, and Dithabaneng) and affects so many villages, it is used by the community, mine workers and trucks. This road became worse after Anglo decided to put the 2 shafts on care and maintainable. The potholes are more dangerous at night and when it’s raining
because accidents happen a lot.
Now the good Samaritans from the community are taking responsibility by filling the holes with cement and they bought the cement from their own finances. We have a community engagement forum with the mine but there’s nothing they are doing about the situation, Traditional Counselors
and ward Counselors are doing nothing about this. To my surprise it is now time for an election campaign to vote, they use this road every day but they are failing to assist. Now these good Samaritans are repairing the road and for a fact even when the tender comes, they will not appoint him but their political friends. We are living in a corrupt country and things don’t get better. My take on this one is to hold mines and local governments accountable, there must be a law that binds them to do good especially when accidents occur they must be held accountable.
Mine and the Local Government must stop taking us for granted, using us only when it is voting time but failing to give us obvious services. As communities, we must try and engage or reach out to the mine and try to repair the road, it will create job opportunities for our people reduce the number of unemployment among our people, and reduce the number of trucks using the road.
