Tunatazama - Community Monitors

Election for steering committee

Victoria Makgoo

On 10 July the community of Magobading village held a meeting at the Magobading ground with Twickenham mine. The mine came to Magobading village to elect the new steering committee; they wanted the youth women and people with disabilities. The main purpose of the election was to have youth that would represent their community and need to know what the community needs. They also indicated that there will be leadership when the mine is re-opened.

Twickenham Mine suggests focusing on issues of youth, women, and people living with disabilities and leadership. As a steering committee, their role in the
community will be based on these points:

1. Guiding community engagement and participation.
2. Ensure that community concerns and needs are addressed.
3. Facilitating communication between mine and the community.

The community was divided when the Twickenham mine was choosing the committee on the
mine`s terms, in the end, the mine agreed with the community according to their concern: what
kind of elections the public wants?

According to the resident “In my opinion, it is important that we, the community of Magobading, are the ones who speak for themselves and then the Twickenham mine needs to hear from the community and come to hear what we need or how to choose”.
