Fighting together to protect the interest of Nyakallong community

Tshepo Tsie

On July 3–5, 2024 there was a march against the Harmony Target mine. Masilonyane Local Municipality joined the Nyakallong community (Matjhabeng Local Municipality) in protesting against the mine.

The march to the Harmony Target mine was organized by the Macua & Wamua organization. This march had the following two goals: to create more jobs and take responsibility for the Voelpan dam, which is currently causing flooding in some streets and homes in Nyakallong (Riverside). They also want the mine to interact with the community. Based on my research, the social labor plan created for the mine should include the following: improving local roads and schools and providing housing, water, and sanitation in the area, all of which have never been done here in the community of Nyakallong.

For a while now, the Matjhabeng community has been fighting the Harmony Target mine for their rights, but nothing has changed. The mine has not responded to the memorandums that the Community of Nyakallong has been sending it. The Community has reached its breaking point because of this mining. Nothing is being done by the mine to benefit the community.
