Mine re-opening.
Bokoni platinum mine is the mother body of the Braakfontein shaft located at Monametse
Village between two sections called Monametse and Mokgotho. The residents acknowledged
the mover impact which never benefited the community before it closed in 2017, the issue
caused the community serious loss. The totalitarian power of the previous leadership oppressed
community grievances and demands, opening the Bokoni platinum mine to walk freely.
The current leadership realized the mining strategy but because of the financial strength of the
mine, the strategy opened another loophole to the Bokoni platinum mine.
The strategy is still the same opportunistic system which in turn will suffer residents, which
divides the community into two parties. This allows two parties to engage with one another on
the same demand while a space of opportunistic movement occurs. The two parties fight for
project ownership and forget about human rights as pillar benefits.
Environmental Risk Management is done by mine to understand if the following issues are
involved:

– Noises
– Dust
– Air pollution
– unemployment rate
– justice
They also forget about the coming generation.

The community is affected by the noise of the big ventilation which brings a lot of toxic air
pollutants like fumes of blasted fuses which will easily pollute the atmosphere surrounding the
area. Dust blows randomly during the up-and-down movement of the cars, trucks, or machinery.
The affected Community by the Bokoni platinum mine was never given any opportunity to
consult those human rights on environmental reports done during their inspection.
The community is now engaged by both parties, which is as follows.
– the first is independently
– the other one is under traditional leadership.
While all those parties belong to the same community, the story of a bull says that If Two Bulls Fight grass is heated.
The community/residents of Monametse need to fight for human rights to benefit from the
development by the mine of the Bokoni platinum mine.
Community members are daily eating dust, with no engagement with such issues which should
be community rights of grievances. Some other issues are involved in their SLP documents
which were not yet fulfilled during their previous operation.
The mining strategy now works, they provide projects to local businesses, to unlock doors of
opportunism. All parties should come together to make one strong committee that will rescue
the community.
