Harmony wastewater pollution has the community in a frenzy

Tshepo Tsie

The Nyakallong community in Allenridge had had enough of the way the Voelpan dam affected
them as neighbors.

The mine was found guilty in November 2019 of releasing wastewater, and the community has
demonstrated that the mine is releasing its contaminated water into the Voelpan dam. All
community members have been fighting for the Nyakallong community ever since the mine was
found guilty of these charges.

The floods have inundated residences and streets with human waste and sewage water, as
houses and infrastructures continue to degrade and collapse. Another MACUA official stated the
"mine pledged to build dwellings for the affected individuals but have since failed to follow their
commitments, leaving the community in extreme danger and terrible conditions.
Let us fight for our rights as communities that are negatively affected by the mine.

The Role of Trade Unions in Communities Hosting Mines that are Shutting Down
The closure of mines can have far-reaching and devastating effects on local communities,
leading to job losses, economic instability, and social upheaval. In such situations, trade unions
play a vital role in protecting the rights and interests of miners and their families. This article
explores the critical role of trade unions in communities hosting mines that are shutting down.

Mine closures can have severe consequences for local communities. The loss of jobs and
income can lead to poverty, hunger, and social unrest. Furthermore, the closure of mines can
also lead to the decline of local businesses, schools, and healthcare services, which can have
long-term effects on the community.
