Abandoned mine shafts in Welkom: A threat to our community
Lerato Matebese
As residents of Welkom, we’re all too familiar with the abandoned shafts scattered throughout our community. But do we truly understand the danger they pose? These shafts are more than just eyesores; they’re ticking time bombs threatening the safety and well-being of our families, friends, and neighbors.
The risk is real: accidents, injuries, and even fatalities. Curious children and adventurous individuals are drawn to these shafts, unaware of the danger that lies within. The environmental impact is also significant, with unsecured shafts contaminating our water sources, soil, and air.
The economic consequences are equally deterring investors, lowering property values, and stifling local economic growth. It’s time for the mining companies and government to take responsibility for rehabilitating these abandoned shafts.
We demand action! We urge the authorities to work with the mining companies to establish a rehabilitation fund, specifically designed to address the legacy of abandoned shafts in our community. We need transparency, accountability, and concrete plans to ensure our safety and well-being. Let’s work together to turn the tide of abandoned shafts in Welkom. It’s time to reclaim our community, our health, and our future.
Proposed action.
>Establish rehabilitation for abandoned shafts.
>Provide support and resources for affected communities.
>Fence off and secure all abandoned shafts.
>Restore the land to its original state.
>Implement regular safety inspections and monitoring.
