A Second Chance to Revive Hope in Ga-Mokaba: Village Denied Schools and Healthcare

Kgwadi Phemello

Imagine a place where children miss school because there are no classrooms, and the sick are rushed 5 km on dusty roads just to see a nurse. This is Ga-Mokaba village, where the loss of a local school and clinic has left residents struggling to access basic education and healthcare.

The crisis is both simple and devastating. Without nearby services, learners must travel long distances or stay home, while emergencies can lead to life-threatening delays. This situation deepens poverty, worsens health, and denies children their right to education.

“I worry every day about my children’s future. Without a school nearby, many are falling behind,” said mother Fothane Jennifer.

Mr. Maheso I.M. added, “When someone falls ill at night, the nearest clinic is 5 km away. By the time we receive help, it’s often too late. We feel abandoned.”

The community is calling on the Mogalakwena Municipality, the Departments of Education and Health, NGOs, and mining companies to take immediate action. They are advocating for the establishment of a Community Hub that includes classrooms and a clinic, as well as urgent health outreach services.

Residents have formed an advocacy group to document every missed school day and health emergency to report to the ward councilor and the Municipality.

This is not just about buildings; it’s about giving Ga-Mokaba a second chance for hope.
