DEFENDING WORKERS RIGHTS AT ALL COST.

DEFENDING WORKERS RIGHTS AT ALL COST. 20 August 2018
Zimbabwe Diamond and allied Minerals workers’ Union ( Zidawu) held a workshop at the majestic Hotsprings resort in Chimanimani on 09 August 2018. The event was held under the Theme ” Defending workers Rights at all cost”. This was a follow up training to the one held on 21-22 April 2018 at Musangano lodge with assistance of ZELA.

Our workshop had participants drawn from our membership from Marange, Chimanimani, Penhalonga and Arda Transau. The presence of ladies was almost at 50% of the total participants which resonates well with our Moto to promote the participation of more women in Zidawu activities.

The morning session covered on Workers Rights and employers’ obligations led by Mr Sunguro, Workers mobilisation and strategies by mr Matende and Grievance Handling and Disciplinary Procedures led by mr Maunga.
The participants had a chance to ask questions and reflect on what they had learnt. This was done by our guest facilitator Mr Nobert. Ms Billian Matambo a well articulated presentation on ” Gender Equality at workplace. Her confidence in presentation of that topic was clear testimony that as Zidawu we have gone miles to capacitate the girl child in our organization. What even made her presentation sweeter was her innovativeness to focus more on How as an organization were going to promote gender equality at workplace through group discussions. It was a diversion from the perennial complaints witnessed in most workshops where women play the victim mode trying to solicit sympathy from their male counterparts. An Action Plan was drafted which hopefully will be adhered to.

The afternoon session was more to do with interaction amongst participants drawn from different areas. Members shared their mining experiences in the Diamond and gold fields. This was done through role play, poems, songs and dances.

We also had an opportunity to hear grueling experiences of both male and female artisinal miners. This is available in video and audio format.participants were able to draw lessons from these performances. Indeed it was another memorable day as members at last made their evaluation of the workshop.
