THERE IS A GAB IN WASTE MANAGEMENT

Zamokwakhe Shabalala

Newcastle municipality launched the Planet vs Plastic initiative to help, save the planet by encouraging residents to use material bags and glass bottles rather than plastic. The campaign aims to promote sustainable materials and reduce plastic use. And promote the use of reusable materials. Many shops and companies are taking this initiative seriously like Eskom, ABSA, the Department of Environmental Affairs, the Department of Economic and Tourism, the Department of Forestry, fishes, and the Environment.

Municipality employees and other stakeholders actively participated in the campaign, picking up littered waste in demonstration of their dedication to preserving the natural environment. The municipality doesn’t do enough about service delivery because we still see litter in the street even when you visit Dannhouser Hospital and Madadeni Hospital we find bins full of waste, and the same litter is flown away back to the environment CWP and EPWP don’t collect litter or keep the environment clean.

My opinion is that all people employed at CWP and EPWP should receive full training, and know how waste is collected and why the municipality collects it. And teach people not to throw garbage everywhere to reduce waste. Finally, the municipality must collect waste to avoid dirty towns or townships. There is a lot to be done by the Municipality and the community to prevent dumping of waste anywhere.

This campaign will be good if it is carried out in rural areas and townships that are affected by waste or that are affected by waste and municipalities that are struggling to collect waste.
