Dust from the tailing and asbestos roof make residents to become ill with asthma
Tshidi sebogodi
Asthma is one of the diseases identified in the year 2020 because it affects all ages in my community, especially children. After all, they play in the tailings. Asthma is a long-term illness that makes your lungs inflamed and makes it hard for a person to breathe. The symptoms of asthma are shortness of breath and a wheezing chest, most of the people in my community are living with this condition.
Every household in my community has a person who has asthma because of the tailing mine dust that is contaminated by very dangerous metals. Many houses still have asbestos roofs which is also very harmful to one’s health. This is happening because the mine dump is not rehabilitated and the is nothing that is controlling the dust from reaching our houses. The asbestos roofs are still high risk because they are also made from materials that come from the mines and have caused airborne diseases many people are living with lung cancer and asthma. This is happening because our government has looted the money to put proper roofs for the community.
We as Bambanani must make the mine take responsibility and account for the environmental crime that they’re causing in our community, We must also do campaigns to the government to give us answers about the funds for removing asbestos roofs because some houses were fortunate to get zinc roofs but many houses did not get proper roofing.
