Mine Impact
Bokoni Platinum mine in Monametse village was the only mine to cater to thousands of
households in Sekhukhune district, what happened in 2017 when the mine closed down was
a blow for households. This includes the transport sector and especially public transport to
the shops.
While there was still mourning about the mine closure the country was hit by a disease
called CV19. While the residents of other parts of the village in Mokgotho suffered
from the situation, other residents were devising a survival plan.
The youngsters who had their ideas came together to dig, without the proper
training to dig the grass.
Bogalatladi residents have witnessed the dangers of illegal mining, putting their lives at risk
with the closure of the Bokoni Platinum mine. The situation has even affected the
underground of the R37 road badly at the bridge.
The pits were left open, with the size of carrying the body inside and the residents could be
killed while the road could collapse.
That is also seen in areas like Monanetse, Mokgotho, Tjibeng, Phasha and Mampa. Mining
pits and the tailing hunger for the lives of residents, nature has been hurt at Ketla in the
name of closure of the Bokoni platinum mine.
Currently, the land has stolen the trees that Mangaka used to save people’s lives. They have
died in large numbers and people’s lives are in danger in the abandoned pits. The
The government is also silent and has not made a plan, while the mine also doesn’t have a plan
to relieve hunger in the village.
That indicates that the mine has failed to provide its SLP document, which requires
commitment to the poverty eradication plan in the affected areas such as Monametse,
Manotwana, Selepe, Maruping, Malomanye, Sefateng, Bogalatladi, Mogolaneg, Mpoteng,
and Mohlahlaneng.
All the valleys counted are affected by the Bokoni mine.
So we say the mine does not tell the truth to the communities, they have not fulfilled justice
in the communities.
