NKOMAZI RIVER POLLUTED

Nkomazi river polluted

#WATERSUPPLYPOLLUTED

The main and biggest river that supply water in the Nkomazi Local Municipality is being used as a dumping side for the waste coming from Nkomazi anthracite mine.

As we moved next to the Nkomazi anthracite mine we realised that the waste from the coal processing plant is being disposed at the Nkomazi river that is passing near the mine on the way from Swaziland.

This is happening after the coal has been washed and their tendency of disposing it to the nearest river of which it is Nkomazi river.

The community of Nkomazi at large are the most affected as they don’t drink the water without boiling it and put jik to cleanse it. Those who are able are buying purified water for drinking.

The mines are always next to the river or streams so that it can be easy for them to dispose the waste that comes from the coal that they wash.

The community people have to be told about mining operations and their impacts on people’s health especially in their way of disposing the waste.

Once the community knows the truth they have to monitor the streams and river’s so that the mines can be hold accountable once bad thing being noticed.
