Sewage is a problem for Snake Park Residents.

Sewage contains bacteria that may cause diarrhea and other infections because of the blocked drains that they don’t maintain in my community of Snake Park lot of children are sick because of these blocked drains of sewage.

On 16 May 2023 lot of our drains were blocked because they don’t maintain sewage drains and it truly affected our children because they are playing on the street, and they are exposed to it. Some of our children can’t even go to school. They are sick from diarrhea and stomach cramps because they play on the streets, and they do not have any knowledge about sewage and the dangers of its things that they must do when they see blocked drains.

He said he has lost his son because of these blocked drains because when it is blocked people come and try to unblock them. They leave it open they don’t close it. So it happened that his son was playing soccer on the street. The blocked drains were exposed as he was trying to fetch the ball on the sewage drain so he fell into the sewage drain.

Interview with Siyabonga Hlongwane

Siyabonga is running a soup kitchen for children in Snake Park Soweto. He has experienced sewer blockage in their yard on the day of the soup kitchen. I t as hard for the children to come inside the yard because the sewer was around the yard.

“I was so sad because I could not even take it to the streets i have a limited number of kids for my soup kitchen. I had to turn the back because my yard was just dirty and smelling “.

People must learn about the dangers of exposed sewage drains and how they affect our community as well as what they should do if they come across exposed sewage drains to prevent any further health risks that come with exposed sewage drains.
