No justice to mining-affected Communities.
Since April 2014, the community members of Monametse have faced serious challenges on
water and electrical lines. The Bokoni platinum mine relocated residents from their Indigenous
land and the mine drifted away from its responsibility to provide information about the following:
– Environmental rights
– Human rights
– justice
The Environmental Risk Management Act says no one should live in a harmful environment and
soil erosion which causes danger to community properties.
Human rights. The relocated residents were expecting the Bokoni platinum mine to activate the
development of the community’s new residential sites. Justice was the first thing to undergo
during the progress of the project as the mine rectified the mass of 2014. In the Monametse housing
project that took place from 2018 and 2020 to 2024, no justice for relocated residents, which
affected Monametse relocated residents.
The following human rights issues were not mine failed to provide the information above:
– Enough portable drinking water.
– paved road to our street roads
– Hanged electrical lines
All those issues made a serious impact on the community residents, by the following;
Water – relocated houses have flashing toilets, if no water and no flashing they fail to provide
alternative toilets and no storage like the JoJo tank.

This affects Monametse relocated residents during the pumping problem and in terms of roads
community inhales dust from the street and gives women tough jobs to clean houses daily.
On the other side, Bokoni platinum mine denied providing information for the community to
claims on development and other grievances that the mine failed to provide to residents.

The project steering committee requested meetings many times, but mine denied all that. That
brings attention to the assumption that because they want DMR to sign for them a new SLP to
operate or re-open the shafts again. The community made decisions to visit DMR for their
grievances, the resolution taken during their last meeting which was on 09/08/2024 at their new side where they moved to in 2014.
