Another young lady succumbed to GBV

The rate of Gender Based Violence is increasing every day in our country. It’s getting worse every day because perpetrators get arrested today and get released the next day and that leaves the families in depression and lack of sleep. The killing of women in and around our villages continues. In the wee hours of 2 am on the 8th of November 2024, a lady in our neighboring village was shot and killed by two men while waiting for the bus to go to work. According to the family’s
statement at the memorial service, the two men did not speak with anyone. Still, they dragged the lady while she was with two men with whom she usually awaited the bus. They said the two men who were standing with the lady at the bus stop retaliated when the men in question dragged her but they were hit with fists. They gave up the fight and that’s when the two armed men fired four bullets at close range at the victim where she sustained serious
injuries which resulted in death.
The family maintained that the lady was in an abusive relationship and shortly before her passing, she had bruises on her body and did not tell them what happened. It is a very sad ordeal as the victim leaves behind her three kids, the last born is as young as 8 months old. The incident shutters the family as they are hoping for the best from her. One suspect has been arrested. Such an incident happened to the victim’s friend who is also her colleague, in
2002 in a village called Segakwaneng around Moruleng but fortunate enough her colleague survived. She was hacked by a panga while waiting for the bus to work also in the wee hours of 2 am, but it was a robbery and she was also raped. They both work at Tumela Mine 1#(Shaft).
Women in mining negotiated for the panga victim to work on a surface level at the mine so that she could report to work later at 7 am not in the early hours but it lasted for a year, the lady went back to the wee hours and this incident traumatized her that she could not speak at the
memorial service. May Justice serve its course for these two victims and may the deceased’s soul rest in peace.
