From farming to mining: The environmental challenges and opportunities (climate change)

Terrence Ngobeni

Kroondal, once a farming hub, has transformed into a mining center and is located approximately 12 kilometers from Rustenburg in the North West province. The Ikemeleng community faces severe environmental challenges due to inadequate waste management, leading to open spaces littered with paper, plastic, and metal. This pollution poses risks to local livestock, such as cows and goats, which graze nearby.

Since September 2024, I have observed that the lack of action regarding waste disposal violates principles outlined in the National Environmental Management Act 107 1998 section 24B (NEMA). The community’s health is at stake, and addressing these issues could create job opportunities through waste management and agricultural leadership programs. By taking the initiative to clean up our environment, we can foster a healthier relationship between the community and mining operations, ultimately promoting justice and reducing tensions.
