Sewage problems affecting our air quality
Lydenburgs stinky sewage is currently affecting our community as a whole. The community
leaders seem to be comfortable and relaxed about this issue, as they try all by means to turn a
blind eye to this issue. The community of Thaba Chweu had thrown a towel and they enjoy
inhaling this toxic air coming from that stinky sewage dam. This has been happening for years
now, and even now, it still affects the surrounding citizens and people who pass by that
particular place every day going to different areas such as work, school, and people who are
living near that sewage. This issue has to stop before we lose citizens.
The air that comes from the sewage is very dangerous to the living organisms at large.
Although it may cause the surrounding people to have diarrhea, fever, cramps, nausea,
vomiting, headache, typhoid, weakness, or loss of appetite, and also loss of smell as that air is
polluted. The people who live there and those who work in that toxic place can have organ
damage or even die because of a naturally occurring gas, hydrogen sulfide which is very
toxic at high concentrations. The most dangerous thing is that there Is a preschool next to that
sewage dam. Therefore the community is at risk and they are responsible for this matter not
only the municipality.
TCLM must make a plan to destroy that sewage dam and rebuild it far away from our people or
living organisms. They can also drain it and replace it with the proper sewage that will not harm
the community. The TCLM has to do their duty on time and protect the community as they
promised not forgetting to serve it.
The dam must be moved to the right place on time if that is the case before we lose innocent
citizens. The surrounding people have to raise their voices by fighting for the best living, their
rights to be heard, and living in a safe environment. The leaders of the community must take
responsibility for fixing, developing, and helping their community members. If not we will make
sure that they step out and we choose new leaders for good. Then the community on its own
has to communicate with the municipality to solve their problems as fast as possible not
forgetting the surrounding mines to help the community where they can, so that our people can
live healthy lifestyles and freely.
