SOCIAL AUDIT ABOUT GREEN HYDROGEN

PRETTY NDABA

The MACUA WAMUA Mapela Branch in Limpopo is conducting a 2-day workshop focused on the Comprehensive Social Audit Research Report conducted in March 2024.  The report examines the impacts of IvanPlats and Anglo-American Mogalakwena Mine on Green Hydrogen production in Mokopane communities. The presentation of the report will provide an overview of the recent Green Hydrogen social audit, including the Social Labour Plans, its purpose, methodology, and key findings.

This is an opportunity for communities to highlight these mining operations’ critical environmental, social, and economic challenges, ensuring local voices are heard and included in decision-making processes. This workshop is crucial in empowering the community to hold the mines accountable for their role in local communities.

The Green Hydrogen Social Audit Task Team conducted a comprehensive visit to the Mapela Communities as part of our ongoing efforts to ensure transparency and accountability in our projects. During this assessment, we observed that many projects have not yet commenced.

A significant issue identified during our visit was the persistent water scarcity faced by the community. Addressing this challenge is paramount for fostering community resilience. Additionally, we noted that the solar mass lights installed in the area are not functioning, primarily due to a lack of maintenance. This represents a missed opportunity for improving safety and quality of life for residents.

This verification process was vital not only to assess the current status of the projects but also to gather insights that will inform a strategic approach to enhance community engagement and project execution. Our findings will guide us in addressing the existing gaps and ensuring that future initiatives are both sustainable and beneficial for the Mapela Communities.
