Water gives us life
Thabo Ishmael Choledi
Our lives have become increasingly difficult due to mining industries that consume a significant
amount of water and pollute our water resources. The time to address the issue of our water
supply is now, especially with summer approaching and the temperatures rising. We need
sufficient water to refresh ourselves, but the government’s restrictions on water usage pose
significant challenges and hardships.
During interviews with my community, one anonymous woman expressed how these water
limitations have created numerous problems. Our homes are filled with dirty laundry that we can
no longer manage like we used to. Even basic hygiene has become a struggle, as we have a
limited water supply. is reserved mainly for toilet use and cooking. We receive little to no support
from the government, while the mines continue to take priority.
Farmers in our community are also suffering. The restrictions on water usage have hampered
livestock care and gardening, leading to a decline in our production. We are currently facing
longer wait times for harvest because of a water shortage. We strongly urge our government to
improve the water supply system for communities, especially those that dwell near mining
operations.
Residents of Jagersfontein are using contaminated water, as our plants are showing severe
distress after being watered. The leaves are wilting and drying out, they struggle to grow or
produce food. We are now calling on our government to intervene in this critical matter. We
have suffered enough and want to thrive, but without water, there is no life. People need water
each day. It is essential for our government to ensure a reliable supply of water at all times.
