Breaking Barriers: Reimagining Inclusive Governance in Entembeni.

Asanda Nxumalo/ Entembeni Crisis Committee

Entembeni is a rural community in KZN(Melmoth) that faces numerous challenges that slow down its development and well-being. One of the most critical issues is the complicated relationship between traditional leadership and governance. The community’s lack of power and agency in decision-making processes has significant implications for our lives and livelihoods.

Traditional leadership in Entembeni plays a crucial role in governance and community decision-making.  This leadership is often characterised by male-dominated and autocratic tendencies, which can exclude certain groups, such as women and youth. The concentration of power in the hands of traditional leaders can lead to a lack of accountability and transparency, further worsening the community’s powerlessness.

In the past years, our mothers were not allowed to attend community meetings; they had to send a man to attend on their behalf. From 2023, they have been permitted to attend, but still, their opinions are not taken seriously in meetings as they are women.

Call for Action

To address the challenges, it is necessary to promote inclusive and participatory governance in Entembeni. This can be done through :

* capacity-building initiatives for traditional leaders and the community.

*establishment of transparent,

*accountable decision-making processes

Empowering our community requires a refined understanding of the involved power interaction forces at play. By acknowledging the historical context and promoting inclusive governance, we can work toward a more balanced and just society where communities have the power to shape their future.
