Breathing Under Siege: The Environmental Struggles of Vosman, Emalahleni
Ronald Mhlakaza and John / Vukani Environmental Movement
In Vosman, Emalahleni, the community faces severe air pollution primarily due to nearby coal mining activities. Regular blasting operations from mines like Schoongezight release harmful dust and chemicals into the air, affecting the community’s health and daily life. This pollution has led to widespread respiratory issues, including asthma and chronic lung diseases, particularly among children and the elderly.
Residents like Mbali Mathebula and her daughter Princess bear the brunt of this crisis. Mbali’s daughters, both asthmatic, were not born with the condition but developed it after living in the coal-affected area. The local healthcare facilities are often inundated with patients and generally under-resourced in terms of appropriate medicine and equipment to assist them. Reportedly, many of Vosman’s hospital patients have been complaining about poor treatment at the facility.
In response to these challenges, the Vukani Environmental Movement (VEM) has been at the forefront of advocating for improved air quality and healthcare services in Vosman. VEM conducts awareness campaigns, engages with local authorities, and pushes for the establishment of more air monitoring stations and mobile clinics to monitor and address health issues related to pollution.
