Explosions of Injustice: Roofs Shattered, Voices Silenced

On June 19, 2025, Ikwezi Mining Company conducted a blasting operation that significantly disturbed the peace of the surrounding community. The violent vibrations and loud explosions shattered the peace, dislodging roofs, loosening ceiling boards, and causing significant cracking in several nearby homes.

A settlement that is only a year and a half old has sustained extensive damage. The roof has been affected by flying rocks, and the vibrations from blasting have caused ceiling boards to become loose and cracks to appear in the walls. The source of these problems is the blasting operations conducted by Ikwezi Mining Company, which uses explosives to break solid rock and coal into smaller fragments. When blasts occur, the resulting ground and air vibrations create shockwaves that disrupt the community, causing trauma, particularly among young children. Many kids become frightened, crying, and rushing into their homes. In some cases, the shock is so overwhelming that they wet themselves.

Property is being damaged, infrastructure is deteriorating, and grazing land is affected as livestock flee from explosions. Unfortunately, many animals injure themselves in their attempts to escape, leading community members to spend hours searching for them. Additionally, the local soccer field, which is vital for the youth in the community, has also been damaged by the mining company. Without any consultation or compensation, Ikwezi Mining extracted coal from this area, leaving young people without an alternative place to play.

These negative impacts are not isolated to the Kliprand pit; they are reported in other areas where Ikwezi Mining conducts blasting operations. Complaints from residents indicate that homes are cracking, and environmental degradation is occurring, underscoring the serious harm caused by the mine’s blasting activities. The Department of Mineral Resources and Energy (DMRE) and its Mine Health and Safety Inspectorate must enhance their efforts to ensure compliance with the conditions outlined in blasting permits issued to mines. They also need to address the demands of mining-affected communities for transparency and proper consultation.
