Relocation and Electricity Issues

Moshabi Selowa

The problem of electricity for relocated residents in Monametse village, particularly in the Malengine section, has become a pressing issue. Residents have reported cracked houses and ongoing electrical problems following the 2023/24 project initiated by Bokoni Platinum Mine.

The Monametse housing projects were launched to address these issues, and while the electricity problem was initially resolved in collaboration with Eskom, complications arose. Eskom’s system indicated an active commercial period, prompting the company to acknowledge the bridge line connecting the house kiosks.

Both Eskom and Bokoni Platinum Mine have attempted to engage with the community to find solutions. However, the lack of electricity has significantly impacted residents. Without access to electrical appliances, women are forced to fetch firewood from the fields. Although Bokoni Platinum Mine provides timber, this support is insufficient, as the community is also concerned about the long-term consequences for future generations.

The impact on the community is widespread, including:

– Mr. Rock has expressed concerns about the lack of electricity, especially with his daughter’s lobola ceremony approaching.

– Schoolchildren are struggling to complete homework and participate in educational programs in preparation for their half-yearly examinations. They also lack opportunities for leisure and relaxation, such as watching TV.

– The deficit in electricity hampers the use of technology, which is crucial for their future learning.

This situation is not solely the responsibility of the relocated residents; it largely stems from issues related to unqualified electricians hired during the project. The repercussions are now evident, and Bokoni Platinum Mine still needs to address these problems.

The only viable solution to restore electricity to the homes is for the mine to settle the bills owed to Eskom. We are actively trying to engage in discussions regarding this matter, but progress is slow. Meetings with Eskom and Bokoni Platinum Mine are expected to take place soon to address the electrical issues.
