The Unpleasant Reality of Hospitalview: A Community in Crisis

Melita Kekana

In our everyday lives, the stench of raw sewage has become the norm, while fresh air feels like an unattainable dream.

We face a constant threat from our failing sewer system, which leads to overwhelming odors and raw sewage overflow in our homes. This alarming situation is compromising our children’s immune systems, resulting in frequent hospitalizations due to cholera. The future for our children looks grim under these conditions.

Privacy and dignity are lost in a community where toxic water has eroded our living conditions. In response, residents have formed an active committee called Community Mobilizing Action to tackle these issues. We demand accountability and swift action from the Mogalakwena Local Municipality to permanently repair the sewage infrastructure.

Policy reforms, such as Sections 24 and 27 of the South African Constitution, state that “Everyone has the right to a healthy environment, and the municipality has a duty to the state.”

Comments from community members reveal a deep sense of frustration. Miss Tumisho Selolo, one of the interviewed residents, shared, “Every two weeks, there is a sewage burst, and it becomes even worse during the rainy season.”

We must address these issues urgently to safeguard the health and future of our community.
