Dumping of clothes next to the river
Thobejane Boitumelo
Our rivers are very important and sacred but what people do to then will break your heart. Rivers are not only for water but there are also living things in them. Some people drink water from the rivers, so is livestock. It looks as if we no longer have respect for our heritage. What will we do without rivers? In the villages women are the ones who collect water for their families.
Looking at clothes dumped near the Motse river, it was found that people are throwing them away which is bad and harmful to the environment. It shows that people started dumping on that area from 2021. This affects everyone in the community and it is damaging the environment.
The dumping is done by people in the community because they don’t have knowledge about the issues of dumping.
We don’t throw away unwanted clothes, if you want to get rid of clothes don’t throw them away because discarded clothes sit in landfill and can take years to biodegrade. They contribute to toxic air pollution. People should donate the clothes to the people in need, sell unwanted clothes online, find another use for clothes, recycle your clothes responsibly. Dumping is a very serious problem in our communities. It is also winter season and some people might need them.
