Impact of Bullying.
Bullying is a serious issue that can have lasting negative effects on our children, schools play a vital role in creating a safe and inclusive environment preventing bullying from truly starting at home.
The importance of teaching right from wrong as community, Parents, and teachers, we have the responsibility to instill positive values and behavior in our children. This includes teaching them the difference between right and wrong, showing kindness and respect for others, and understanding the impact of their words and actions by supporting teachers and schools. Our teachers dedicate themselves to nurturing and educating our children, however, it can be challenging to address behavior issues when not reinforced at home.
HERE ARE THE FACTS
: Opening communication- maintain regular communication with teachers to discuss our children’s behavior and concerns.
: Enforcing consequences- At home follow through with appropriate consequences when our children behave poorly, reinforcing the lesson learned at school.
: Modeling positive behavior- let us be mindful of how we treat others, setting a positive example for our children.
Together as a community, parents, teachers, and school governing bodies can create a powerful force against Bullying.
Opening dialogues with children are kind of like drama and talking openly with our children about bullying and encouraging them to speak up if they see or experience it and collaborative anti-bullying programs.
With guardians’ approval, Ororiseng said” This happened for the first time in our school, there was no bullying in our school all those years. Surprisingly it happened the day the principal and social workers held the meeting with all of us (learners). Two hours after the meeting, that’s when a girl from grade 11 started a fight with her classmate. After their fight, the victim went to her class teacher asking for a permission letter to go home without reporting the Bullying incident.”
Amogelang says “It seemed like she was targeting only one learner in our classroom because she was always threatened by this girl”. When she arrived home she told her sister that she was not feeling well, and she wanted to take a nap and sleep, she wrote a letter and after she overdosed on painkillers, that’s how she committed suicide.
The community, parents, and the family of the victim started to take a stand, and also the learners refused to go to the classrooms the following day after they heard from the family. They wanted justice for their fellow learner.
The principal and teachers wrote an email to the Department of Education immediately after the complaint from the family of the victim, asking for permission to expel this bully learner, The Department of Education didn’t waste any time and they allowed the Principal to expel that learner with immediate effect.
By working together, we can create a safe and supportive environment where all children can thrive. In my last words, I say the community and parents must stand behind our teachers and schools to join forces and make a difference.
