A project to fix Nyakallong
Khanyisile Matsaba
On the 08 th of August 2024, Makhotla, David, myself, and the two monitors from Nyakallong held meetings at Mosala Secondary School, which is the only one affected school by Voelpan and the Kraal area called Masakeng.
The main purpose of the meetings is for both areas to work hand in hand with us regarding the Voelpan Mosala meeting was the introduction of phytoremediation on how it will benefit the school and the learners not only environmentally but also economically and health-wise, the meeting was a success because the school governing body agreed to the project and for both learners and teachers to work on the project most especially biology, economics and geography educators.
Some of the learners who are writing articles for the Nyakallong Foundation volunteered to write about the project and its processes. The Masakeng meeting was also a success as the herdsmen also agreed to work hand in hand with issuing more information about the sickness of both the livestock and theirs and
help will be provided like Vets and testing of water. All this began during the late days of 2021 when the mine discharged a huge amount of its chemical water into the Voelpan which flooded the section called riverside and the front part of Masakeng. And the water is still a problem to this day.
There is a way forward as long as we stand together and grab every opportunity that comes forth and hopefully, the community of Nyakallong will find justice.
