Water Supply Interruption in Emalahleni Local

The Emalahleni Local Municipality’s planned water supply infrastructure maintenance which was scheduled from August 26 to 31- 2024 experienced significant delays (5 days). The project aimed to address issues at the Point D pump station, including pipe leak repairs and suction valve replacement, as announced on Emalahleni Radio Station by the new MEC.
Unfortunately, the top-down approach neglected community concerns, leading to prolonged water supply disruptions. The municipality should have conducted thorough evaluations and research, leaving vulnerable communities without access to clean water. Many were forced to rely on polluted stream water, resulting in health issues such as diarrhea, vomiting, and skin rashes.
The community councils’ intervention led to a partial reopening of the water supply on September 16, 2024, although later than promised. Notably, the new MEC has assured that the water quality has improved significantly.

• Lack of Community Engagement: The municipality’s failure to engage with the community led to significant hardships.
• Poor Planning: Insufficient research and evaluations resulted in inadequate support for vulnerable populations.
• Health Implications: The use of polluted water led to various health issues among residents.

The Emalahleni Local Municipality’s water supply interruption highlights the importance of community-centered approaches and thorough planning in maintaining essential services. To prevent similar incidents, the municipality must prioritize engagement, research, and collaboration with the community. By doing so, they can ensure that the rights and needs of all residents are respected and addressed.
