CRISIS IN GA MITCHELL VILLAGE: OVERFLOWING WITH RAW SEWAGE

Mapula Langa

Imagine a place where the air is thick with the scent of human waste, and the ground where children play is a pool of filth. This is the reality in Ga Mitchell Village, where a severe sewage spill is threatening the lives and dignity of the local community.

This ongoing crisis requires immediate intervention. A massive sewage leak has created stagnant water pools in public areas, transforming the local landscape into a hazardous zone.

Children are at a higher risk because their immune systems are still developing. I interviewed Lerato Chidi, a mother of two. She described her morning struggle, stating, “This morning, I had to carry my children across the street so their school shoes wouldn’t get soaked in waste.” She frequently noted cases of diarrhea and stomach cramps that recur each time there is an active spill.

I also spoke with Mr. Sebola, a community youth leader. He expressed feelings of loss of dignity, high levels of stress, and shame because they cannot keep their area clean or invite guests over.

The community is urgently calling on the Mogalakwena Municipality to intervene immediately to repair the blockage. They also request that the Department of Health conduct community health screenings and promote hygiene awareness.

Residents are demanding that the Mogalakwena Municipality address the infrastructure failure and carry out permanent repairs. They seek immediate assistance from the Department of Health for affected residents. A community health committee has been formed to engage with the Municipality regarding the sewage spill.

We encourage residents to document every instance of spillage and consistently report each overflow to the local ward councilor and the Municipality.
